PAS 2035 Retrofit Coordinator boosts Sustainability team
We recently published an article on the need for retrofitting in the UK and how it will be an integral part of meeting the UK’s carbon emission targets. To facilitate this, however, research from the New Economics Foundation has estimated the UK will need 36,000 Retrofit Coordinators before 2030. The Retrofit Coordinators responsible for managing and delivering retrofit work must be qualified under the PAS 2035 criteria. PAS 2035 is a framework written by Dr Peter Rickaby and designed for the energy retrofit of domestic buildings. It provides best practice guidance for domestic retrofit projects and adopts a ‘whole-house’ or ‘whole-building’ approach that considers occupants and end users.
PAS 2035 in practice
The Cudd Bentley sustainability team is already working within the PAS 2035 framework as this is mandatory on all domestic retrofit projects delivered under TrustMark. TrustMark is the recognised Quality Mark for the energy efficiency sector and compliance with TrustMark and PAS 2035 is required by government-funded schemes such as:
- The Energy Company Obligation (ECO)
- Local Authority Delivery (LAD) scheme
- Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF)
- Home Upgrade Grant (HUG) scheme
- Sustainable Warmth
Implementation and management however requires a qualified Retrofit Coordinator.
What is a PAS 2035 Coordinator?
A Retrofit Coordinator protects both the Client’s and public interests. They are qualified to manage retrofit projects from start to finish, including monitoring and evaluation, and handle technical and process risks in domestic retrofits. This role is crucial in succeeding in meeting government targets to reduce carbon emissions and overhaul the UK’s domestic housing stock. Key responsibilities of a PAS 2035 Retrofit Coordinator:
- Project Management
- Compliance with PAS 2035
- Stakeholder Management
- Risk Assessment
- Energy Modelling
- Retrofit Design Review
- Installation Oversight
- Documentation and Reporting
- Client Communication
- Quality Assurance
A Retrofit Coordinator acts as a project manager, liaising with stakeholders such as assessors, designers, and installers to ensure a successful retrofit project. They ensure compliance with regulations, manage risks and maintain quality standards throughout.
The PAS 2035 Process Map
The Retrofit Coordinator contributes throughout the PAS 2035 process. The role is end to end, spanning steps 1 to 6 below:
Retrofit Coordinator boosts CBC Sustainability team
The widespread adoption of PAS 2035 has already begun and CBC therefore recognised the need to have a qualified Retrofit Coordinator within our team and we are proud to announce our very own Ayesha Batool has achieved this qualification.
“Hi all, just wanted to share that I passed the retrofit coordinator qualification course from Nottingham Trent. It was a labour of love! I attended the evening classes on crutches last year and therefore am very proud of this achievement. It took nearly 5 months of coursework followed by several levels of scrutinisation. This qualification enables me to advise, assess, monitor and coordinate any domestic retrofit works aimed to achieve at least an EPC ‘C’ rating.” Ayesha Batool
There are several government retrofit grants available for single or multiple property upgrades. Anyone in receipt of any kind of allowance from the government such as universal credit, child allowance or job seeker allowance, will be eligible for a grant for an upgrade to their home, provided they are homeowners. There are also grants available for those not on government allowance, e.g. the Great British Insulation scheme offers free loft insulation upgrades to eligible properties.
